HIV / AIDS
Is there a difference between HIV and AIDS?
Most definitely! HIV is the name of the virus one can actually contract. When someone is infected, they are diagnosed with “HIV Disease.” For all intents and purposes, there are little or no symptoms associated with early infection (Asymptomatic HIV Disease). It is important to remember that as many as 30% of all individuals infected with HIV DO NOT go on to get sick. Of those who do, they may start to develop opportunistic infections several years after initial infection. At that point, the diagnosis may change to Symptomatic HIV Disease. If they develop one of the conditions on the list of diagnostic illnesses, they are then diagnosed with AIDS.
