Herpes

What is viral shedding?

Viral shedding is when the virus is present in the skin or in saliva without any recognizable signs or symptoms of an outbreak. People with recurrent oral Herpes shed the virus in their saliva approximately 5% of the time. People with recurrent genital Herpes may shed the virus from the genital area approximately 6-10% of the time. In both cases, that decreases over time. In other words, the longer the person has had Herpes, the less shedding they are going to have. The presence of the virus due to viral shedding can only be detected through a laboratory culture.
