STDs & STIs

What are STDs?

STD is short for sexually transmitted diseases. They are now more commonly referred to as STI which is short for sexually transmitted infection. STDs (or STI)’s are infections that can be passed on by someone who already has a sexually transmitted infection through intimate contact or sexual activity. STDs can be caused by viruses or bacteria. STDs caused by viruses can be treated but not cured. Some examples of viral STDs are hepatitis B, herpes, HIV and HPV (human papilloma virus).  STDs caused by bacteria can be cured with treatment. Some examples of bacterial STDs include chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis.
