What is the HPV Vaccine?

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Gardasil, the first vaccine developed to prevent cervical cancer, precancerous genital lesions and genital warts that are due to HPV types 6, 11, 16 and 18. The vaccine is approved for use in females 9-26 years of age and it is recommended to be given to girls between the ages of 8 and 11, before they become exposed to the virus. Unfortunately, it does not protect women who have already been exposed. Gardasil may not fully protect everyone and regular cervical cancer screenings are still recommended. To date, the vaccine has not proven to be effective for men.
