What Treatments are Available for HPV?
Depending on where the warts are and how big they are, there are a few options available to treat them.
Your doctor will help you decide which is the best option for you. Your doctor may
also opt for no treatment all, given the fact that genital warts often disappear,
Topical treatments are available, including TCA, or trichloroacetic acid.
In
women who are or might be pregnant, some topical treatments might be
absorbed and be toxic to the fetus so be sure to speak with your
doctor. Other treatments include
cryosurgery (freezing),
electrocautery (burning), and laser treatments.
In cases where the warts are very largeand persistent, your doctor may decide on more traditional surgery as an option.
If
warts return after they have been treated, especially with surgery,
your doctor may want to inject the immune-modulating drug alpha
interferon directly into the warts. This, however, has not been shown to be effective in preventing the warts from returning.
While HPV is treatable, it cannot be cured.
Treatments can help eliminate warts, but they do not eliminate the virus from one’s body.
It is impossible to determine when, if, or how often warts may appear even after treatment.
