Herpes

How do I know if I’ve been infected with herpes?

Symptoms usually appear within the first couple of days to a few weeks after infection, and can include:

Blisters, usually on the mouth, vagina, penis, anus or buttocks

Open sores

Itching or burning in the infected areas

Burning feelings when urinating

Swollen glands in the groin area

Fever, chills, headaches

Rundown, achy feelings, like the “flu”

Often, symptoms are not noticed or ignored until after blisters appear

In some cases it may be years before symptoms appear, and for some there are never any symptoms, but herpes usually appears as an “outbreak” of small clusters of blisters on and around the area where infection occurred. These outbreaks typically recur periodically – some people have more frequent recurrences, others may have only one or two a year, or fewer.
