Genital Warts
What if a pregnant woman has genital warts?
If a woman has had genital warts, but no longer has them, it is unlikely that she will have problems during pregnancy. However, she should always tell her physician. Genital warts may cause a number of problems during pregnancy. Warts on the vaginal wall can make the vagina less elastic during delivery. Warts may also enlarge during pregnancy, making it difficult to urinate or can causing bleeding during pregnancy.
Rarely, a baby born to a mother with genital warts may suffer from serious medical conditions, which includes developing warts in his/her throat making, possibly requiring surgery to prevent obstruction to the breathing airway. A cesarean section (C-section) delivery may be needed if warts are blocking the birth canal or if the warts are likely to bleed heavily.
