Genital Warts

How are genital warts treated?

There are treatments for genital warts, though they often disappear even without treatment. Treatment for warts can include surgical procedures or medications. It is important to remember that even when genital warts are cleared, the underlying virus is never completely eliminated; genital warts may reappear even after treatment.

Topical treatment medications for treating genital warts include:

Imiquimod (Aldara)

Podofilox (Condylox)

Podophylin

Trichloroacetic acid (TCA)

Biochlroacetic acid (BCA)

Please be aware that treatment for genital warts must be prescribed by a physician. Over-the-counter medication should not be used.

Surgical options for treating genital warts include:

Cryotherapy – warts are frozen off

Electrocautery – an electric current is used to burn warts off

Surgical excision – warts are cut off using special tools

Laser treatments – light is used to destroy warts

Interferon – a substance injected into the wart
