How common is genital warts?


Genital warts is caused by a type of virus called HPV, human papilloma virus. There are over 100 different types of HPV but only four of them are considered to be sexually transmitted. Two of these can cause condyloma (genital warts) and two can cause cervical cancer in women. There are approximately 24 million cases of HPV in American women and it is believed that that by the age of 50, nearly 80% of women will be affected by the virus.
