HIV / AIDS
If a woman living with HIV is pregnant, will the pregnancy affect the progression of her HIV disease? What about passing it to the fetus?
Being pregnant does not seem to have any effect on HIV progression. The virus can, however, be passed to the child through vaginal delivery or breastfeeding. A pregnant women living with HIV should stay in close contact with her physician and discuss treatment options thoroughly. Antiretroviral treatments have managed to reduce perinatal transmission (mother to child) significantly.
